They do, they work in even numbers. The moment you accidentally slip in an odd number, you’ve fucked it up, meaning you have to go all the way back and find your mistake, or make another error to even it out.
Given the style of cliff (flat vs sloped), it can be a real pain in the ass to find out where you went wrong.
