Tile Input

Normally when I edit tiles, I mostly add little tweaks here and there to existing tilesets where I think they’re needed. Like Empyria on Valikorlia. I didn’t make a new tileset, I added everything I needed as I needed it. Sandy beaches, additions to castle or house tiles, ect…

Making a whole new tileset is somewhat new to me, so I’m just curious what people think. Also, suggestions and comments are welcome. Here’s a basic Crypts tileset I’m working on.

Notes:

  • The red and blue stone paths on the side are mostly placeholders until I find better colors.
  • The broken stairs, I’m thinking of redoing. They’re not all that flexible in game concidering how many tiles there are.
  • The green stuff on the floor is supposed to be hurting ground, but doesn’t seem to work with New World tiles, so I’ll probably script it into the level later.
  • Pillars and rubble are part of a seperate sprite sheet and not tiles.

Yes, I know a few tiles and objects are just edits of default tiles, so are subject to change if I ever come up with something better.

Looks a bit too… “Predefined colors from MS Paint”-y to me

The walls do look like standard colours, but the slime looks brilliant. Perhaps use the slimes colour as a base to what the walls will look like.

They look nice though.

Coloring is always something I have trouble with, lol. I don’t use MS Paint, I use Paint Shop Pro, but yeah, I know my coloring kinda sucks.

The wall color to the floor color isn’t all that great…,

Hmmmm they lack depth… get some shadows in there!

Oh, I plan to do shadows and other little details for atmosphere. But I like to get the core graphics done first, to avoid my getting distracted and never finishing, lol.

seteffectmode 2 ftw!

Very handy for creating shadow lighting effects =P

My input

I suggest darkening the whole dungeon set. When I think of a dungeon, I think of it being dark, and sort of musty.
Like a medieval dungeon, you could probally take some pointers from games already out there.

Graal Pics1 Edit (Not really the floor or wall top, just the collumn)

I say keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more from you.
I also suggest adding a borderline so the floor tile doesn’t just run into the wall.

in the sense that it looks like a completely different game than all this other graal

I like it like it is

its a unique style, however all other things would have to reflect it (characters, etc)

but if it must be ditched, depth and colorchanged are needed

but I understand if you put that off so you can get down the main stuff right now

why am I doublespacing aaa

I’d suggest changing the contrast on the walls and floor. Or better yet hue and saturation if your using photoshop/paintshop.

On my screen atleast, they seem to poppy to me. But, i’m sure it’d grow on anyone with time. Nice job mate

Hmm, so it seems the only issues people really have overall is the coloring. Granted in use with seteffect, the tiles look darker. Normally I pester Shigeru to tweak coloring on my work, but he’s been away lately and I’ve been stuck doing it myself for once, lol.

The same goes for midis. I can made decent midis, but my instruments and drums suck… thus I usually have Shig fix those too.

Here’s one of my old midis just because I’m bored XD

So, what do you use for graphics, eh?

well to be honest with you I like your midi file. It’s a nice fast based action sort of midi, but with the colouring of your graphics ask your Shigeru what he does and learn from that. I probably need to do the same because my colouring is really shit >.<

If you have trouble with shading or lighting, learn pixel art.
And start small and isometric, don’t think pixel art means huge awesome detailed 976x518 imagurs
do icons and stuff, cardboard boxes (better than just a cube, because you do have to incorporate detail etc)

good place to learn, graphicsgale is my recommended program, or mspaint is fine if you really want a kickstart on being awesome.

I’ve been making graal graphics since… let’s see… 2002, maybe 2003. Normally my graphics are random objects or additions to the base tileset. Thus, it’s been easy work. Especially with coloring, since I’m mearly matching to existing graphics and such.

With the crypt tiles, I’ve attempted to avoid default graal colors. Not to avoid the graal feel, but to try and just give some diversity. Obviously that coloring method did not work out so great for me, lol. I’m working on some tweaks now, so I’ll post some updates soon.

O.O MEGAMAN!! YEEEEHAW!
