I’m sorry for a newbie question, I’m sure if I used the right keywords in the search function I could find what I’m looking for but I’ll post this anyway.
It’s been a long time since I was involved with a Graal Reborn server, and the servers I was involved with all used the default Graal Online images.
I’m aware that there’s been efforts made by the Graal Reborn community to somewhat distance this project from Graal Online.
To stop waffling like an ass, my question is: Since any use of Graal Reborn images is apparently against the law does that mean a developer has to find all new images for the things like message boxes etc when they’re setting up a server?
Woopsie: I meant Graal Online images, not Graal Reborn
I consider the default tileset and graphics certainly on every Graal client before 2.4 which is the newest Reborn uses to be a Fair Use complaint derivative meaning that it was originally modified from something else, in this case Zelda 3 A Link To The Past tiles, basically that was used as a template and a few pixels and colors of that were changed around to make the newer Graal tilesets and graphics. Pretty much everything else is player made stuff which I consider to fall under Creative Commons 2.0 or something similar.
I would consider it perfectly fine unless you started charging money for it or making a profit.
Our ideal use of Imperim will involve making the experience as close to Graal as possible… as a test. And then comes the beautiful de-tangling of all of the stock resources we’re used to, e.g. sound effects, just to stay legal and try out the fun of the new system. We will be doing this more as part of being creative and less in worry of legal issues, but it’s a good question to ask!
