Is there a head making tutorial around? It’s fun recoloring other people’s heads/bodies but I think I want to take a stab at making my own head from scratch.
I don’t think so. Heads are pretty straight forward. 32x32 frames. If you want fancier hair than a 32x32 grid allows, go with Hair Hats, lol.
If you want to know which frames are which, I always just use head26 for a reference (can’t stand the newb mohawk head XD).
The only real annoyance is the trial and error with alignment. But that’s all there is to it. You do your best when making the head, then play around with it in game to make sure it’s aligned.
Edit: Oh, for the frame for “Pulling” when your character is facing north, that frame is actually 32x48. I forgot about that one difference.
Here are three graphics that might help you get started.
Good luck.
Magenta is not a color.
Haha I used colors I’d hope no one would ever use for a head
i just edit my pallet to get the colours i like, alway gotta make sure you edit the right ones coz if you want custom colours in your body parts you cant use the pallet slots used by the standard colours. not that it matters with heads that much.

With bodies, I don’t even bother worrying about the colors being changable in game. I don’t really like the 18-19 colors we’re stuck with in that method, plus I often find myself needing more colors than allowed. My only real annoyance is that trial and error on alignment are a godsend compared to getting the body to actually work in game, lol. Which color is transpant likes to randomly pick any color but the right one when I save c.c
Lol, my body went transparent too when I modified it to use the color I wanted. So I had beholder fix that one for me. I have no idea how to fix it, but it has to do with the palette.

I usually just open an existing image, paste whatever i’ve created in, and then save to preserve the existing palette. I’m not sure what it should be, is there a write up on images on a wiki somewhere…
Shigeru knows how, or just gets very lucky. He always fixes my bodies, lol. But I can never figure out how he does it and always forget to ask him when I see him
From memory they must be 8bit PNG, but other than that I’m not sure of the details…
Saving in .png (randomly?) will make it go crazy and think theres a million colors in there.
If you use Photoshop make sure you change the image mode to Indexed Color before you save it.
Having an unoptimized palette while trying to retain color indexes is only vital for “bodies”. Not nearly so much for heads.
Thanks for all of the info.
