I just finished Metroid: Other M and I quite liked it actually.
There was some ups and downs to it. Could have definitely been improved.
Pros: Smooth Controls, Graphically pleasing, story, battling system, 3rd person aspect/1st person aspect.
Cons: Too short, ending was crap, hard-mode is a no power-ups run which I think is dumb; part of the fun is collecting shit (it should be an option in the menu though), the story at parts were crap, too easy.
I read the reviews too and they made me not want to play it, but I’m glad I did. Samus is kind of uncomfortably puss-ish in the game, but I guess it didn’t bother me that much. However, it was still fun. I’d recommend renting it; it only takes a few hours to beat (maybe 10+).
First person mode kinda sucked, I was swearing so hard at that part at the end where I thought I had to defeat all the enemies in the room stuck like that. Then I noticed MB was there “…Oh. I just have to point at her.”. I couldn’t for the life of me notice that bit of slime on the ground in that one pixel hunt part on my own either. I suppose there were some exhilarating moments where I jumped into first person, shot a missile at something, and jumped out at just the right moment to dodge an attack, but I really could have done without that mode.
Would it really have been that hard to let me plug in a nunchuck and just have C or Z be used for going first person? Running around in a 3D space in third person with the D-Pad feels so early PS1. Still, the way Samus moves (I love how she’s always booking it!) and jumps looks and feels damn good despite the 8-way directional limitation.
You know, despite parts of the story and cut scenes, Samus still feels like a bad ass gameplay wise by the end of the game. Tearing through enemies with the speed booster, plasma beam and power bomb while searching for the remaining items to get 100% was pretty good. However, that kinda highlighted the bland level design in most areas for me. Also so much loading and slowdown from just going too fast from room to room >_<.
I actually enjoyed the cutscenes. Ignoring the dumber parts of the story, it’s nice to see a Metroid game with such nice CG.
Overall, a good game. But a mediocre Metroid game at best.
I never played Other M, but Prime Hunters fucked up my L button on my DS when I first got one. (It was the shoot button) In fact, everybody in my house has broken a DS due to this game lol. Yeah, Metroid is still awesome…
