I’m using Paint.net to make my bodies, and am saving them as 8-bit .pngs. They keep appearing weird, just black, bordered in black, etc. Is there something I’m supposed to do to make them appear properly? Or a lightweight free editor I can use? I’m making a body that’s not regular graal style (so it doesn’t have changeable colors). Thanks
Save it with a Fixed / Non-Optimized palette, otherwise the color indexes will shuffle around.
Transparency, etc are not bound by the image or colors, but by the color’s index.
Look at body.png for an example, any indexes over… 10(?) is unmodifiable by the setcoat/setshoes etc commands.
I’ve answered this exact quest about a dozen times on these forums.
Hey look, I threw “making bodies” into the Search function and found a few instances.

There a program that I can use where I can manipulate all this? Paint.net doesn’t offer very extensive saving options. I can only change color depth, dithering , and transparency.

I know, i searched. And was kinda disappointed in getting that answer, but didn’t say nothing of it and asked for reference to a program where I can actually do something with your answer >>;;

Suppose I’ll pick up PSP and see how using it works out for me.
I’d recommend PSP for palette control.
Adobe can do it too, supposedly.
But Adobe is more… Bells and whistles and fuzzing images from googles together with fancy filters.
It’s horrible when you require specific details down to the last pixel as opposed to “I’ll just make it blurry and pretty”.
Most of the bodies on Official nowadays are 24bit images using alphamaps, when the bodies themselves use less than 16 colors; the fuck, learn how to save images and set a proper transparency people. Just because you can save and use a 24bit image, doesn’t mean you should every freaking time. end “slackass vs optimization” rant
Got PSP9, is working fine. Is there a faster way to change the pallete besides ‘copy and pasting’ (in effect, at least), to move the used colors to indexes 7+ without having to then redraw my graphics?
Hmm. Trying to think of the usual method I’ve used…
Take a body.png, set the palette size to… 8bit if you need more colors.
Then edit the palette and manually add in your ‘new’ colors.
Then take your new body image, and paste it over ontop of the body.png.
The colors shouldn’t switch around or get garbled if you did it right.
Now you can save the body image with an unoptimized palette (located in the Save As with an Options button)
Alright, thanks a bunch.

That’s just because you suck at using photoshop…
Roflmao. I have photoshop anyway, but not on this comp. Where i’m at, it would’ve taken too long to download. PSP works fine for this purpose, but I do still prefer paint.net and photoshop xD.

I prefer to view it as the fact that Photoshop uses its own logic to decide where to place and name functions. A logic that I just don’t “get,” while Paint Shop Pro organizes and names things in easier to find places with more general names. I mean, heck. Image/Palette is where all the palette management functions are. I’ll be damned if I can figure out where Photoshop places its manual palette management tools.
i actually like photoshop’s organization better… doesn’t feel as convoluted (at least, for the things in it i actually use) paint shop pro just feels like a mess. I love how Paint.net is setup the best, and it’s lightweight nature, but it’s lacking a couple of features i like in paintshop and photoshop.
Aye, I typically use(d) MS Paint for drawing, and Paint Shop Pro primarily for saving/palette control. Suppose I should try seeing if I can steal XP’s MS Paint from my mother’s comp. Win7’s MS Paint is horrible for pixel work. Or you know, give Paint.NET an actual shot.
I need to get back to work- Nalin knows what I mean about that. Hahaha
…Nevermind, it antialises the tools and there doesn’t seem to be an option to turn it off.
You can. It’s a little squiggly thing… hold on, i’ll show you rofl. meh. too lazy. it’s a half swastika. Usually at the end of the bar with tools. "Tools: tool name; tool parameters; anti-aliasing swastika.
Meh, I just grabbed WinXP’s paint anyway. ;D
Oh hey, post milestone.
And also, i find I’ll use PSP for saving/palette control, as you said (i mean, that’s why i got it after all), paint.net for drawing/pixelwork, etc.; and photoshop for the pretty overly effect laden banners and stuff I’ll make… since that’s all it’s really good for, and I find myself making those a lot anyhow… >__>
also, (favorite word), congrats
While I’m at it, i’m trying to use custom walking/idle .ganis, and I’m using the replaceani command and it doesn’t seem to be working ><.

It’s been said that I’m an NPC.
Seems like it… xD What time is it there in your part of Canadia?
-4 GMT in this there parts in the land of Canadia.
Ah, same here, but usually -5. Dunno if Canadia has Daylight savings/summer time.

This is actually really easy in photoshop… If you have image → mode set to indexed, it’s right under image → mode → color table, is it really that hard for you people? It’s not especially hard to find out. :S
