It took me two years to step up from 98SE to XP. And I would still be using 98SE if it had the support. If things come to where XP is phased out, I’ll move to Linux.
After I seing this, I started thinking about Windows and if/when it will die. Windows has been the most popular OS solution since before I was born and it’s hard to envision is dying, but it has to. Right?
This is one of the worst places to discuss something like this because of the massive non-Windows bias that exists here.
It’s not a question of if you like Windows or not. I just want to know how you think it will die and when it will happen.
It’s not a question of if you like Windows or not. I just want to know how you think it will die and when it will happen.
You think that question can be answered more reasonably by people who hate it?
I think about 2 people here don’t use windows.
Using and liking are two different things.
“I just want to know” does not equate to “you think that blah blah more reasonably” someone is reading words into shit and over complicating it.
Windows will die if they don’t revive and fix the standard explorer desktop and they have to not fuck it up if they do it.
But I think as long as directx is a thing and you can’t get native copies of commercial software like ableton and after effects then Windows will stick around in one form or another.
I like Windows. I do like Linux and other open source OSes. But I’ll always use Windows, while it’s viable, because video game performance and commercial products.
Also before “Mac has commercial product support” okay good point too bad I’m not a fan really lmao not against it but eh also yo still no directx there
Only if you don’t have any options.
They’re still different things. I said that under the assumption that the people that don’t like Windows are using it only because they have software that requires it. (Since that’s the only reason they would anyway.)
If new release 3d games is your thing, then, yes, you are stuck with Windows. However, if you are like me, you can get away with any OS you want. I can’t think if anything besides 3d gaming that would hold anyone back because Wine is always and option, and Wine works.

There are other stuff programs that require low latency were WINE doesn’t suffice.
I think Windows is already dying in the personal computing environment because of all the smartpads and shit. Most people that only use internet for facebook, email and browsing pictures of cute cats/dogs doesn’t need Windows. They need an OS for dummies. (iOS/Android)
Windows will stick around in business environments for as long as they can keep software companies to make software for their OS mainly and scrap that horrible Metro UI that no one benefits from.
That’s my opinion, and I assume most people would agree about it.
To Codr: If someone is being biased about something, it’s you.
I love Windows, its cheap and reliable. Sure it’s not perfect, but I’m too god damned lazy to setup Linux. I don’t really have a standing on Macintosh, but it seems a lot of dumbasses that don’t know shit use it.
I think Windows is already dying in the personal computing environment because of all the smartpads and shit.
It’s computers that’re dying, not any particular OS.
To Codr: If someone is being biased about something, it’s you.
Would you care to show me where?
By “computers” do you mean open/x86 systems, like what you’re using now? To say that computers are dying when console gaming, ATMs, smart phones and tablets are all rising in popularity is pretty absurd.

That sounds like something I would say. I’m referring to desktop computers and laptops to a lesser degree. It seems pretty common to refer to desktop computers as only “computer”, so I didn’t think there’d be too much to question.
Windows started to become decent in 98SE, 2000, XP and Server 2003 with their later service packs updates and patches. Too bad microsoft had to ruin it by turning all their later OSes and software such as Vista, 7 and 8 into bloated badly designed, almost unusable garbage. Unless Microsoft goes back to clean, unbloated, straightforward and functional then I will NOT be using any product from them newer than Server 2003 even if it’s free or they pay me to use it. IMO most varieties of Linux such as Ubuntu or Mint are already better than Windows 7 or 8. Microsoft also did a decent job with Office 97, 2000 and 2003 but completely ruined it after the 2007 version… in many cases with new versions of software you can’t even download it or get a CD and use it on your own PC anymore… You gotta pay the same amount of money and go to a website with a “Live version” or “Cloud version”… These days you’re just better off to use free software for everything such as OpenOffice and GIMP. I don’t like nonsense, games or shiny GUIs with huge round buttons in awkward places as if the OS was designed for a special needs kindergarten class where the users have no expectation of actually doing anything meaningful… I’m an old school keyboard and mouse real computer guy. I’d sooner shove the XboxOne biometric spy cam up my bum than use a cellphone or pad to replace a computer or gaming console.
