Do I really need to give a reason? Discuss

I will soon start using Debian or Ubuntu 24/7 as everything I do on my computer is now possible in GNU/Linux with wine without issues. And as for games, Valve is porting steam and the source engine to linux! And many games are playable in linux under wine also, but I do most of my gaming on Xbox anyway so that’s really not an issue.
I heard they rebuilt the whole damn thing. So binaries built on Windows 7 won’t even run on Windows 8. I haven’t even bothered to read about it yet.
The whole reason of nearly everyone using MS Windows/DOS based operating systems was due to the compatibility and standardization of software, hardware, and drivers, after Windows98SE and WindowsXP this point quickly diminished, since Vista and 7 everyone basically only uses Microsoft and Windows products because it is pre-packed with every consumer device and people don’t know any better. Since Vista program compatibility and other issues that used to make Windows favorable basically fell off a cliff. I can more easily and stably run any 32bit Windows program or use any hardware made before 2007 on Mandrake Linux 8.1 “which was a linux distro released over a decade ago” than I could on Vista or 7. I can only imagine how horrible 8 will be, yet people will end up praising it and using it nonetheless. There is no good reason to use any version of Windows newer than XP SP3 or Windows Server 2003 “The 5.2 Win kernal” and don’t go “hurdurrr Windows 7 is secure and faster” it simply is not… You want a newer OS? Try Ubuntu 12.04 you will find it can run a surprising amount of win32 based programs and has support for virtually every piece of hardware, and it has a very large and easy to install library of open source Linux native programs. Try running even a simple NES emulator such as FCEUltra in Windows 7 or Vista and it will not run properly and invert the colors, the same issues apply to millions of other common and fairly new programs.

- Well, i have tried Windows 8 in the past, when the CUSTOMER PREVIEW came out. To be honest its quite cool, but its kinda “ADVANCED” for the modern computer user. In my opinion, generally Windows is running out of ideas and attempting to beat its competition by submitting anything into the markets. Windows has yet to discover that the trick that they are attempting to pull off won’t last very long. Don’t get me wrong i still prefer Window’s products way more than its competitors! (SORRY to you Mac users, and or Linux.) When i first read this topic, you dragged me into it with Ubuntu 12.04. I’ve never heard of this OS, and i immediately started to research, and heres what i found.
WINDOWS 8
Benefits
-
Custom Start Screen, looks a bit like XBOX’s. (WHOA!)
-
Making it Touch Screen Compatible with flip Laptops. (From a Tablet to a laptop)
-
Its Manufacture’s Name… (WINDOWS)
-
Better Gaming Experience
-
Allows the user to apply muti-tasking skills, into using the computer.
-
Over-all Buffered Material
Now, i want you to compare Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate, to Windows 8 Home Premium or Ultimate. If you look closely, there are no differences. But, there are some thrown here and there. Since Windows 8 released the new start screen, i think that dragged in most customers even though, they did not know how complicated it would be to operate a system with Windows 8. Its the brother to a great operating system. As we all know Windows 7 actually made the company really advanced into the computer OS building, and got really good FeedBack from general users of Windows 7. I do understand that there has to be an advancement in Operating systems, but Microsoft could have made it easier and more “slick” for a modern user to pull off. Since, we are headed into the most advanced technology stage in the world, OSs and Computers have to advance with the people of uses, but Microsoft has went a bit to far into the future with Windows 8.
Ubuntu 12.04
Benefits
-
A Great Log-in system for a general user
-
Os that is headed in the right way.
-
Generally organized.
-
Good For a College student, and not quite for gaming.
-
Presentation and Document wise, is GREAT!
Now, an Ubuntu 12.04 hands down is a great OS for a computer to be running. Ubuntu offers great twists and turns in the operating system, making organization 10x easier! But, as every paragraph has to have negation or its buts, its not ment for gaming. You can rig the OS into pulling off games, you can also make it pull off SKYRIM if you wanted to. But, the OS was not ment for that. It was generally made for College students, or a working person that must have things in tact and organized. If you are one of these, i recommend this OS for you, but if your a gaming person i suggest Windows 7. Right now, Ubuntu 12.04 is great, i’ve looked at it, heck, i even tried it. But, if you are not using this computer for organization or work, i don’t suggest this Operating System. Its just simply a fact.
This is false. Though they have changed the api a bit like they do on each version which causes older applications not to work properly. Windows 8 is a updated Windows 7 with the ribbon controls for everything (that shitty bloated controls that got introduced with MS Office 2010) and removal of startmenu and addition of the “Metro UI” instead.

Ubuntu for a Gamer isn’t that bad. Most games are playable via WINE and a lot of the games even has better performance in WINE since the GNU/Linux OS takes up less resources than windows as is.
I can still run Linux on a old 486 PC and it runs smoothly. Of course you’d need to strip away some apps that are heavy on graphics and memory, but I don’t need all these eyecandy software running on my computer anyway, so I’m good! ![]()
Yea i’d say that you do.
Windows 8 comes with Metro UI (not actually called that anymore due to copyrights) which is the new tile based interface which is the only available UI for Windows RT devices. Regardless if you love it or hate it this allows people to develop an application and push it to Desktop, Windows RT & Windows Phone 8 without having to maintain 3 separate code bases.
As for lowering performance, the OS has been optimized in a variety of areas making it faster than previous versions of Windows - especially during startup/shutdown process where they have employed new kernel caching technologies to speed up cold boots dramatically.
Just because they have introduced the tile interface doesn’t mean the desktop has been neglected though, there is a new explorer with a ribbon UI and a slimline toolbar with the most common functions as well as the ability to pin any you want there (By default it has Properties & New Folder) and as a result of the slimming down you can now see more files at once.
Windows has also been updated to support multi-monitors better with the ability for the taskbar to span to other displays as well as set wallpapers individually and while performing multiple concurrent cut/copy/paste operations they combine the dialog into one with the ability to pause transfers independently.
There’s a lot of other cool improvements and tweaks done to the OS to make things faster and improve the usability on the desktop. Some people have tried to report worse gaming performance against Windows 8 but it uses the same graphics rendering api, same driver framework & same drivers as Windows 7 so it’s not really any different in that respect, especially since some sites say Windows 7 is faster and others say Windows 8 is faster but the difference is only a few frames so can be attributed to anything.
That’s incorrect, Windows RT is the version for Tablets and a derivative of it is Windows Phone 8. Windows 8 has the full desktop experience and is not made for phones/tablets (except for x86 Surface tablets).
As far as Ubuntu is concerned I was previously a firm advocate of it but with them getting rid of Gnome and pushing the bloated Unity interface which is severely lacking direction (not good for desktops or tablets & especially bad for netbooks lol) I feel they have been taking a step backwards. It is a lot slower than it was in the past and i’d much rather recommend Xubuntu which is powered by the XFCE desktop environment which these days is much like a more customisable version of Gnome2. I’m dual booting Windows 8 & an XFCE desktop. Steam for Linux is pretty good but video performance is still lacking, thankfully NVIDIA are hard at work with Valve to constantly make their drivers better. This is probably in preparation for the launch of Valve’s steam box next year. Interesting stuff and great for Linux users everywhere ![]()
Ubuntu = Xubuntu. No difference. Just uninstall unity and install xfce.
I’ve been using xfce since 2004-2005, haven’t changed much. Works best for me.
I also dislike windows 8, I had the IT manager pay (15$) for the upgrade on one of the less used PCs so I could mess with it. I don’t care for the interface, Windows 7 all the way. Going to try out the new Ubuntu flavor, had some bad performance issues before. Noticed some tablet stuff being advertised on the main page due out within the end of today.
I like it, remember if you don’t upgrade your bios and have somewhat of a newer machine there is a chance your computer wont be all that stable with it p:
It’s much faster than 7 on my machine x.x I built my computer last year and ran 7 on it, I don’t do much on my computer besides play games, do some game design and graphic design.
After installing windows 8 I could see the difference in speed pretty fast actually
As for people who hate the tiles, it’s actually pretty easy to use and it’s eye candy also for people like me who actually care how things look.
I like how I can just check the weather by going into my start menu, same with my facebook’s feed.
Tiles are pretty sick.
I’m not saying Windows is the best OS, I’m just saying Windows 8 isn’t as bad as people are making it out to be.
Why is it cool to hate what’s new? xd
It’s fast, it looks nice, and people who hate it are people who won’t give it a chance
The interface is pretty much the same aside from the start UI’s, Apps, Xbox integration etc.
I like how the apps are integrated, I can just download a ton of the crap I use through the app store so I can be even more lazy.
I was surprised that IE actually worked pretty well on it, same speeds as chrome on it xd I still use chrome though none the less.
Ubuntu… well I used to run it from a usb key so it got annoying whenever I installed too many plugins it wouldn’t install all the other plugins I needed… requires a lot of plugins if you want to do anything ubuntu-like.
Windows has the same problem and plugins are not archived all at the same place like ubuntu’s…
But let’s be honest, what we use most is internet so whichever os we use, internet is the key. Ubuntu has an issue of freezing often while I browse and not windows. So that’s it.
Additionnaly, I’m way more used to window xp’s explorer than I am to Ubuntu’s what’s-the-name-again… and ubuntu freezes when I unzip stuff… in fact it freezes often for no particular reason.
I haven’t tryed windows 8 and never will, since I’m ok with XP and will probably upgrade to vista when I get a 64bit computer since I already have the cd… or get windows 10… anyway I like xp so much I hope they’ll make a 64bit version
random freezes on linux are probably from hardware failure. or that you are using very new hardware that linux doesnt fully support it yet. it’s usually the video card that is too new for linux to handle with default settings.
There was already a 64bit version of XP?
http://www.evaluesoftware.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2124&gclid=CLnk3YiL2LUCFeZFMgodOW8Adg
They made a 64bit version of XP, but it was discontinued due to lack of interest. However installing win 2003 server 64bit and doing some tweaks makes it basically a 64bit version of XP (they both use the same kernel).

USB keydrives are often really slow, which would cause any reading or writing to the key the OS to seem to freeze. If you had Windows on a keydrive it would probably feel even worse.
If you upgrade soon, I would go for 7 instead of Vista. Vista just sucks, 7 is a much better revision of what Vista was supposed to be. And you can make it look like XP somewhat.

That’s not Linux’s fault though, blame the manufacturers for not opensourcing the drivers or making proper ones.
I blame you
I use XP X64 Edition. It is modified by Rocks Team, but it is modified to be more stable. Been running the same install for two years and haven’t had a problem yet. I am partial to the older Operating Systems, and only use something like XP because older ones aren’t compatible with software/hardware that I use. But really, if I could get away with Win98, or better yet, 3.11 I sure would. I imagine once Windows 10 comes out, I’ll finally upgrade to 7. It just seems like they take too much away when they come out with newer builds of Windows. Or if they don’t remove, they move it, rename it, or change it in some other way to make it more difficult to find and use if you’re well adjusted to the older ones. So I like to stick with the ones that I know.
As for Linux, I have only two hours of experience on a Debian WHITE build for the Wii… so I don’t know anything really.
I signed up specifically to tell you how unqualified you are to be making any judgements for or against anything, when you experience problems with programs that nobody else does.
There’s nothing wrong with Windows 7, but there may be something wrong with you.
slowclap
I am currently on Windows 7 but I rather be on Linux, unfortunately the current kernel don’t seem to like my network card anymore which I don’t understand why. It used to work back on 2.6 but I dont know anymore.
